UNIT 9, NISSAN

PITCH-R

BRIEF

Nissan, a long-time sponsor of the Champions League, sought to highlight their association with smart cars and grassroots football through a ground-breaking project called PitchR. The concept behind PitchR was to create an autonomous rover capable of drawing football pitches anywhere across the globe. This innovative initiative aimed to bridge the worlds of technology and sports.

Unit9, in collaboration with Robo Challenge, embarked on this project. Our role was to design and develop the physical rover, while Unit9 focused on creating the intelligent software. Crafting a rover with the ability to autonomously paint football pitches required an intricate drive system, prompting the creation of an innovative drive platform. Crafted entirely from billet aircraft-grade aluminium, each wheel and leg of the rover operated independently. This allowed PitchR to step over painted lines, adjust its weight balance, and execute sharp turns, making it an exceptionally versatile robot. Our team also integrated a dual paint system and the necessary electronics to control the robot. The bodywork, maintaining the high standards of Nissan concept cars, was entirely 3D printed and meticulously finished.

WHAT WE DID

The results were nothing short of incredible. In a mere three months, encompassing design, development, and testing phases, PitchR was successfully painting football pitches autonomously. This achievement marked the commencement of the Nissan Football Lab, with PitchR setting the stage for future innovations and advancements in the intersection of automotive technology and sports.
