CBBC, BLUE PETER

WAVE RUNNER

BRIEF

To inspire home audiences to get involved with Sport Relief, Blue Peter presenter Lindsay Russell took on an unprecedented challenge as the Wave Runner. Attempting what had never been done before, Lindsay set out to cross the Irish Sea in an inflatable orb ball. Given the bold nature of this endeavour, Blue Peter needed a skilled team to design and build a customised orb ball, robust enough to withstand the demands of an ocean crossing. Robo Challenge rose to the occasion, bringing this ambitious vision to life.

Robo Challenge was quickly enlisted to provide expert consultation band guidance for this ambitious project. Our team's mission was to ensure Lindsay's unprecedented challenge could be achieved safely and effectively. We engineered a specialised rig for the orb ball to prevent it from rolling over or sinking in rough seas. To confirm its seaworthiness, we carried out rigorous testing in collaboration with the RNLI (Royal National Lifeboat Institution), ensuring the ball was ready to withstand the demanding conditions of the Irish Sea crossing.

WHAT WE DID

The outcome of Lindsay Russell's daring challenge was nothing short of remarkable. Despite facing difficult weather, she covered an impressive 30 kilometres in the orb ball before strong winds redirected her. This feat not only tested limits but also ignited inspiration, motivating Blue Peter viewers to support Sport Relief. Lindsay's journey exemplified resilience and sparked widespread engagement. Robo Challenge is proud to have contributed to this groundbreaking endeavour, demonstrating our commitment to turning ambitious visions into reality.
